Abbrevs save time

by LCH on September 29, 2003

Do you find yourself abbreviating words a lot in OneNote and Journal? I do.

I noticed John Porcaro takes shortcuts in his handwriting too. In this inked email he posted on his blog, for instance, he abbreviates “marketing” with “Mktg.” I wonder how common it is for people to abbreviate words in their handwriting.

To improve recognition of my handwritten abbreviations, I’ve added the most common ones to the recognition dictionary using the Tablet PC Dictionary Power Toy. It improves the recognition a lot.

However, I keep thinking it would be interesting if OneNote could internally expand these abbreviations. In this way I could save time by writing the abbreviations, but still have the benefit of searching for the whole words or copy/paste the recognized text in its expanded form. I know I’ve mentioned this before–I keep wondering if it’s worthwhile and/or possible to do.

It could work similar to Word’s “Autocorrect” feature, I think, hopefully from the same list, so that you could add to the list from either application and make use of it in the other. Perhaps also the ability to mark an item as “ink only”, or “keyboard only” for the occasional exception.

Buzz, isn’t that kindof what ActiveWords does? I wonder how it works with handwriting.
