Will Laptop Hunters ever find a Tablet PC?

by LCH on March 29, 2009

The latest Windows campaign, called Laptop Hunters, has generated quite a stir on TechMeme and Apple community sites. A bunch of people seem to be taking offense to the Lauren commercial in which an aspiring actress sets out to find a 17″ laptop for under $1000. Of course, since there isn’t such an Apple logoed beast, she purchases an HP machine for $699 and as is good. That is until the Mac fans start discecting the various aspects of the commercial. Did she really go into the Apple store they ask? Did she realize the features of the machine she bought? Was she reading a script? Mac fans want to know.

Well, I’m not all caught up in this. The ad was fine in itself.

However, I’m left wondering: Will Microsoft give Tablet PCs any mention in their Laptop Hunters campaign? I’m beginning to doubt it. If you check out the various hunter scenarios on the ad campaign’s landing page, for instance, you’ll find one for Gamers, Jetsetters, Socialites, Designers, Parents, and All Arounds (whatever that is) and digging deeper into which PC is recommended for each scenario you’ll find no mentions of Tablet PCs.

Maybe that makes a bit of sense. Maybe the deck is stacked here. But that makes me wonder, why isn’t Microsoft touting Tablet PCs where there’s no doubt about Microsoft leading Apple? Why isn’t there a Teacher category? Or a scenario for students? These would be excellent scenarios for Tablet PC adoption.

Oh well. Maybe next life time. Sometimes I wonder if the Tablet PC gets any respect. :-)

Microsoft’s Laptop Hunters ad campaign seems to be centered around standard laptops. There’s no mention of Tablet PCs. This seems kind of odd because Tablets are one area where Microsoft is way ahead of Apple.

I fear that MS has parked this technology in a side road.

Mel, sometimes MS does a great job of mentioning Tablet PCs and other times, well, you wonder what they’re thinking. I’m wondering if they’re thinking in terms of consumers here. I think some marketers look at Tablets PCs and think they are for the business market and not consumers. Maybe that’s what’s going on here.

After talking with a couple people I realized no one is getting my drawing :-) .

It’s supposed to be some stick figure guys replacing the standard laptop in a Laptop Hunters page with a Tablet PC. The middle guy is sawing out the existing laptop image from the web page and the guy below is ready to catch it in a trashcan. The top guy is lowering a Tablet PC into its place.

Next time I need to draw better :-)
