Apple sneaks Safari 3.1 into Windows updater

Friday, March 21st, 2008

There’s a bit of rumbling today over whether Apple is right or wrong in installing Safari by default via iTunes’ updater. I really get a kick out of the people defending this one.

Despite what some people are arguing, the defaults are used in a program are a big deal. It is for MSN; it is for Yahoo; it is for Google; it is for Apple. I don’t care who is doing it, setting defaults to expand market share by “default” is rude. It doesn’t matter if it’s Safari or a toolbar. Rude is rude.

There are other ways for Safari to grow market share. This isn’t a good one.

And, yes, I have Safari installed on my system. That’s not what this is about.

Flash crashing IE on your system?

Saturday, December 29th, 2007

I wasn’t sure if this was just a problem with my M400 or not, but I noticed that Flash was causing IE 7 to crash a lot. In fact, now I have two systems where IE crashes multiple times a day: the M400 and the new M700.

I’m guessing that IE crashes between 4 and 5 times a day. Sometimes IE does an auto-recovery; sometimes not. But one thing is for sure, it doesn’t like something about my configuration.

Now it may not be Flash causing the problem, but it appears to be. Crashes often occur when I’m watching a video stream on ustream.tv or a similar site. It’s beginning to get annoying.

IE7 renders this blog differently

Tuesday, October 24th, 2006

I need to take a closer look at the template files for this blog evidently.

The just released IE7 is rendering the home page a little differently than IE 6 and the latest Firefox. The problem is that the content is not wrapping at the correct right edge of the page. It makes entries a mess that have right justified photos. I’m not sure if this is an IE7 issue or a more basic problem with the formatting on this blog.

(By the way, I like this little act of kindness from the IE 7 team.)

Video iPod in my future?

Monday, July 31st, 2006

I’ve been watching so many online videos and video blogs recently that I’ve been thinking about getting a video iPod. My brother has one, but he doesn’t use it that much for actually watching videos. I’m not sure why.

One problem with the video iPod is that it doesn’t work quite the way I need. My ideal device would have WiFi support so that I can watched streamed content. Actually, because WiFi isn’t everywhere, it would need EVDO or comparable support. Hmmm, that could get expensive. An alternative solution would be for more publishers to provide downloadable content as well as streamed video.

Along these lines, if my mythical video device had a good broadband connection, I’d want a SlingMedia viewer for it. Yeah, I’m getting ahead of the technology fast, aren’t I?

Another issue I’ve realized is that I need a faster way to pick videos to watch. Currently I find videos through hit-and-miss browsing which isn’t going to be that practical on a small device, even if the capability were supported.

There’s an opportunity here.

Gliffy: an online diagramming app

Gliffy: A very cool Flash-based diagramming app that runs in the browser.
