The A-list is missing the Marc

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

With the news that JKOnTheRun is joining GigaOM, James Kendrick takes a moment to reflect on this past year’s loss of a great fellow contributor and one of the most warm-hearted persons you’d ever meet, Marc Orchant. Reading through the comments on James’ post it looks like quite a few people have been thinking about Marc recently too. I’m included in that group.

I’ve thought about Marc quite a bit over the last several months. I’ve thought about the conversations we would have had about the latest iPhone or about using tech in new and interesting ways. I’ve thought about how he’d approach this or that particular situation. And most of all I’ve thought about the hug he gave me after I finished my first round of chemo and radiation. His pure enthusiasm and warm nature is sorely missed–in person and I think among the A-list. It’s not the same, particularly when the tussles are louder than the tech.

I miss you Marc.

More cancer challenges ahead

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

I haven’t been posting much lately. I’ve been taking a couple days off to just go do things. I went to a rodeo. Never had done that before. Kind of interesting. I drove up to the Grand Canyon and walked a bit of Bright Angel Trail. Hadn’t done that before either. And this weekend Lan, her niece and possibly Lora and a couple friends are going to Disneyland. (Anyone else want to join us?)

Oh, and…I started chemo again.

A couple weeks back one of my routine PEC/CT scans showed a small spot of suspicious activity and after a biopsy it was confirmed to be cancerous. So I’m back on chemo as plans are made to best figure out how to attack this thing.

I’m doing really well and unlike my last experience with chemo, I’m in really good shape–well, at least for me. :-) So bring it on I say.

As I get back to blogging I have a couple very cool projects I’ve been working on and I’m trying to decide how to best prioritize things to get them out the door so people can get to using them and the real fun can begin. Hmmm. Should I go for the impossible or the improbable? I’m thinking both. :-)

Merry Christmas to all!

Wishing you and your family a Merry, Merry Christmas!

Marc Orchant passed away today

Sunday, December 9th, 2007

It’s with great sadness that I write this post: a terrific person, Marc Orchant, passed away today. Marc you’re going to be terribly missed. A wonderful, wonderful person you always have been. I looked forward to meeting you at conferences, online, wherever. Pleasant, smart, eager, inspiring are just a few of the words of that I can think of which remind me of our time together.

I wish the family the best during this difficult time.

Services are to held this Wednesday.

Hanging Christmas lights Day 1

Sunday, December 10th, 2006

It feels more like Christmas now. I got some of the Christmas lights up.

Today is a picnic day

Sunday, December 10th, 2006

I have a half dozen chores to do today, but top on my list of must do’s is to have a picnic.

It’s sunny, fairly warm, and just seems like a good day to sit in the park and have a picnic.

You gotta love Phoenix in the winter.

Another day of no posting

Friday, August 4th, 2006

I’ve been too busy to post anything on this blog for the last couple days.

A friend of ours was in a car accident and we’ve been shuffling priorities to help out. Things are settling down now and I need to catch up on work so this will be another day of no posting.

So what happened? Well, it was one of those big car versus little car battles where the big car won. Two cars travelling into an intersection at the same time at Phoenix road speeds is not a good thing. However, it looks like everyone involved is going to be fine. It’ll just take some time.

Happy Birthday Lora!

Happy Birthday to my sister Lora, who never is seen without at least one Tablet.

Happy Birthday Layne!

Thursday, June 29th, 2006

Happy Birthday to my brother Layne! He said he celebrated by fixing spaghetti for dinner and now he’s settled down for a good night of fighting spam on his sites here and here. Sounds like fun. Heh.

Gliffy: an online diagramming app

Gliffy: A very cool Flash-based diagramming app that runs in the browser.

Half-speed ahead

Thursday, February 16th, 2006

It happened somewhere between the Tablet PC Partner Briefing and DEMO. I got sick. You know, one of those hard to shake winter colds. I’ve been in a daze for a little over a week. Finally, I’m feeling half my self again and it feels good.

Last night my energy started returning and I was finally able to work for more than my cold-throttled 30 minute stretches.

Whew. Now I can get back to getting InkGestures out.

Home again

Got back last night from CES. A terrific whirlwind of a time.

Today I’m going to be catching up on work and posting about CES. Lots to talk about.

Merry Christmas

Saturday, December 25th, 2004

Wishing everyone the best for this Holiday Season.

Layne shares how we started Christmas day:

“In our family, Christmas Day begins with a waffle breakfast. This year was no different, but I was a state away and missing the family gathering.

So Loren propped up his webcam-equipped Tablet PC on a chair next to the table so I could watch and listen over MSN Messenger.”
